About us

The medical tradition of Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB) originates in Universitas Claudiopolitana (the University of Cluj), where medical activities commenced in 1775/1776. This tradition was subsequently continued within the Hungarian university and later within the Romanian university in Cluj. In 1945, within the newly established “Hungarian-language University” in Cluj—later known as Bolyai University—a Faculty of Medicine was founded; this faculty was subsequently relocated to Târgu Mureș. In 1948, as part of the communist reform of the education system, the biomedical component was separated from the Romanian University of Cluj, which at that time operated under the name Victor Babeș University.

In order to ensure continuity with its historical legacy and to position itself in relation to present and future developments in the field—Babeș-Bolyai University being the legal successor of the Romanian University of Cluj and, implicitly, of its academic tradition—UBB established the School of Health in 2020. This structure was further developed in 2022 into the UBB School of Health – UBBMed. The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences was formally established by Government Decision no. 412 of 24 April 2025.
